We had a super weekend at Harrogate Show Ground for the ‘Fabulous at 50 Show’.
Nutrichef chef, Martin Gray and I gave two cookery demonstrations on the Sunday, each with an audience of 150+ people.
In the morning our demo was on Cooking for a Healthy Heart and in the afternoon we focused on Eating to Look and Feel Ten Years Younger. We were delighted with the response – including all the questions after the show and numerous requests for recipes!
Please look at our Fabulous at 50 page for some of the recipes and don’t forget that if you want to see more recipes, check out Eating to Alleviate Ailments and our A-Z of Healthy Eating in Barbara’s Articles. Also, watch this space for the Cooking Demo Video that we filmed on the day.
I’d like to thank everyone for attending, especially the group of ladies in the front row for all their enthusiasm and love of healthy food! Thanks again to the organisers and a very BIG thank you to Martin who did all the cooking and to Lisa for doing the filming and calming our nerves!
We look forward to seeing you at the Bournemouth event in September!
Another Happy Customer (and a trip to Harrogate)
We hear from happy customers every day, but I’d like to share with you some feedback from a new customer who started a meal plan just six days ago.
The lady had suffered with a painful, swollen gland under one of her arms for several years.
However, to her great delight and relief, the swelling has almost completely disappeared!
This is just another of the many stories we hear from customers who have experienced the benefits of our healthy meals almost straight away. If you are a Nutrichef customer and you would like to add your testimonial to our growing list, we would love to hear from you. Please use the
Contact Us page on this web site.
We have an exciting weekend coming up, as we're going to be giving a couple of cooking presentations at the very popular ‘Fabulous at 50 Show’ in Harrogate. More on this in next week's Blog. In the meantime, have a great Bank Holiday weekend.
‘Half Ton Dad’
I wonder if you watched ‘Half Ton Dad’ on Channel 4 last night. It featured a 73-stone man with morbid obesity (meaning he would die from obesity-related illness unless he urgently improved the situation).
Whenever I’m asked if surgery for weight loss is a good thing, I say that it should only be considered as a last resort – and that diet and exercise is the best option in 99.9% of cases. However, being unable to even get out of bed, there was clearly no other choice for the gentleman in the programme.
At the end it was great to see that surgery had given him a new lease of life and that he is now able to play with his grand-daughter. It was just a great shame to see what he was feeding her: a hamburger and fries!
Why we’re Dairy Free
I hope you had a great bank holiday weekend. I spent a lot of the weekend in the garden, parts of which are looking more like a jungle! The grass is so tall in some places that my 7-year-old can hide in it and my ten-year-old said we need to buy a cow to graze it! Not a bad idea, although if we did have our own pet cow, we’d choose to get our calcium from another source, not an udder one!
One of the biggest myths about the whole dairy issue is that we have to get our calcium from cows! Not true! We can get it from the same place that they get it: green leafy vegetables – in their case that means grass, while in our case that means things like spring greens, kale, watercress, parsley, spinach and broccoli. We get calcium from other sources, too, like oats, tofu, fish, figs, almonds, brazil nuts, sesame seeds and soya yogurt.
So, what’s wrong with dairy? We’ve known for a long time that it’s high in artery-clogging cholesterol, but more and more evidence is emerging of other problems associated with dairy, including lactose intolerance, diabetes and even cancer. For a more in depth look at these concerns, you can access an article called ‘White Lies’ via vegetarian.org.uk or you can read an interesting article called
‘Dairy Monsters’ that appeared in The Guardian in December 2003.
Because these concerns exist, and since there are alternative, very tasty sources of calcium available, Nutrichef will continue to operate a dairy-free meal delivery service. By providing a huge variety of ingredients, including fish three times a week, tofu, oats, fruit, nuts and leafy green vegetables, we are confident that our meals provide far more calcium than most people get in the average western diet. As well as getting calcium from our meals, we also advise that customers use calcium-enriched dairy-free alternatives to milk such as Oatly or Rice Dream, both of which can be delivered with your meals.
Welcome to the first Nutrichef Blog!
How exciting, the weather is warming up and spring is in the air. I recently put away all of the winter clothes and I just love all of the spring and summer colours.
I’ve had a lot of customers coming onto meal plans recently because they’re not fitting into last year’s clothes. This is the perfect time to remotivate yourself by starting a healthy eating programme. Out with the old and in with the new!
Remember to drink lots of water - especially if you’re embarking on a new exercise routine as well - one and a half to two litres of water daily should be fine. Try to drink your water between meals and not with them, since mixing water with food will dilute the stomach acids that are trying so hard to break down your food! Also on the topic of drink, limit your teas and coffee to only two a day, but always try to use non-dairy milk when possible. I’ll explain why in next week’s blog!
