Reducing the Risk of Cancer

I read an interesting article this weekend about public scepticism of advice about cancer. What seems to be happening is that the publication of the findings of so much new research into various health matters is causing people to believe that scientists don’t agree with each other – even though there is almost unanimous agreement about the fundamental ways of reducing one’s risk of developing cancer: don’t smoke, keep a healthy weight, drink less alcohol, eat a healthy, balanced diet, get plenty of physical exercise and stay safe in the sun.

The article mentions a YouGov survey of 2,400 people for the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), which reported that over 50% of people think that scientists are “always changing their minds”. More alarmingly, more than a quarter of the people in the survey said health advice changed constantly and the best approach was to “ignore it completely”. However, the WCRF said its advice, including eating more fruit and vegetables, while limiting the intake of red meat, had stayed the same for more than a decade.

Richard Evans, head of communications for WCRF, said: “It is a cause for concern if people are not listening to cancer prevention advice because they have the impression that scientists are always changing their minds”. He explained that there had been some changes to advice in recent years - but these were “not abrupt about turns”. For example, the evidence linking body fat with cancer has become much stronger over the last ten years. This has led scientists to give a greater emphasis to the importance of maintaining a healthy weight, now making it the second most important thing we can do to avoid cancer, where the first is to refrain from smoking.

It is with solid scientific facts in mind that Nutrichef’s diet meal delivery system incorporates the following important features:

  • A very wide variety of fruit and vegetables – giving you at least ten different kinds every single day
  • Red meat just once a week, although we do offer a vegetarian meal delivery service
  • Fish three times a week (optional), giving you a variety of healthy omega fats
