Grapes, grapefruit, green beans, garlic and ginger are just some of the foods beginning with ‘G’. Grapes and grapefruit are fantastic fruits, packed with a range of vital nutrients. Both of them are great for breakfast or served chopped on a salad. Today I’m going to focus on green beans, garlic and ginger in a little more detail, as well as a couple of lesser known items: guava and grouper. Finally, I’ll give you a recipe that contains all five.
Grouper, in case you haven’t heard of it, is a warm water fish found in the Mediterranean Sea and around the Caribbean islands. It’s a good source of protein and omega-3 – an ‘essential fatty acid’ that’s good for the heart. The meat has a firm texture and can be flaked onto soups or salads.
Guavas, which grow in warm, sunny climates are actually one of the most common fruits in the world. They’re very fragrant fruits with green or yellow skin and grow to the size of a tennis ball. The flesh of the guava is a pinky-white and a very good source of vitamin C. Guavas are a great addition to a fruit salad or stir-fry.
Green beans might not be as exotic as guavas, but they’re no less nutritious. They’re a good source of vitamins A and C, as well as calcium – a mineral required not just for healthy bones and teeth, but also essential for nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction.
Garlic is an amazing vegetable. Due to its antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties it is sometimes called ‘Nature’s Antibiotic’. Garlic is a good source of calcium, phosphorus, potassium and vitamin C. It adds flavour to sauces, steamed vegetables, fish and meats. One of my favourite tricks is to infuse olive oil with garlic cloves, and then to use the oil in salad dressings.
Ginger is another amazing health-promoting ingredient, and is particularly effective at improving circulation and diminishing menstrual cramps. Ginger is a good source of a variety of minerals including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. Thinly sliced garlic provides a delicious Asian flavour when added to a stir-fry.
Here’s my delicious recipe with all five of the above mentioned items in it for Pan Fried Grouper with Guava Salsa………….
4 grouper fillets
3 tbsp olive oil
1 inch of ginger (finely chopped)
1 bunch greens beans (boiled)
Salsa
1garlic clove (chopped)
1 bunch parsley (chopped)
2 tomatoes (chopped)
½ guava (chopped)
Fry the grouper in the olive oil and ginger until golden brown. Serve on a bed of green beans and garnish with the salsa. To make the salsa, simply mix all of the ingredients together and serve!
